In collaboration with the Goethe Institute in Belgrade, and as part of "Weeks of German Culture", Dis-patch is co-presenting a very special event just one week after the end of our offiicial festival program. The theme of the party is the city of Berlin, and the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall which divided the city, and whose implications have left a deep trace on the geopolitical map of Europe.
The city itself was transformed, and has been going through further tranformations ever since. For about a decade following the catharsic "fall" of the wall, Berlin has been the perfect ground for development of diverse artistic scenes, a space for exploring expressions entirely out of the mainstream, in the abandoned spaces of the former East Berlin. This situation also coincided with the uprising of techno music and club culture in Europe, and Berlin has fast become THE continental destination for clubbers. It had to offer a dark, but still friendly and open atmpshere, desolate industrial spaces (such as the legendary club E-Werk, for example) and an open spirit where no one needed to know where you were coming from or going to. In a specific way, the overall social spirit of Berlin was reflecting a situation taking place in the night, in the city's clubs. The stories of a changing Berlin as a whole, and its club scene and cultural life are pretty much overlapped in the last 20 years, with the dissolvement of the Wall as the starting point.
Ten more years down the line, the sometime deserted and damaged areas of Mitte and Prenzaulberg now have their new, slick, freshly painted faces and corresponding real-estate prices. Berlin has become a breeding ground for a vast number of artists and musicians who are constantly gravitating towards it, moving in from Canada, USA and from all over Europe. The open spirit of Berlin - wide-open spaces, concentration of culture, its cosmopolitan population and a constant flow of visitors - is what makes it so attractive to new generations of urban nomads, many of whom find a way to stick around. Some for a week, some for several years or forever.
For some, it has lost its special appeal but even today, 20 years later when so much has changed, Berlin is still a home to some of the best and most unique clubs in Europe. The first on this list must be the monumental Berghain/Panorama Bar, situated near Ostbahnhof station in the former East Berlin, famous for its amazing venue, massive PA system, diverse program and weekend-long parties. For this music celebration of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall taking place in Belgrade, we are presenting DJs, live acts and VJs who will offer you a glimpse of the vibrant Berlin night life, Berghain's resident acts or regular performers, alongside special live video projects which will use and process footage from different periods of city of Berlin.
